Another copy over from my other blog. This is the first laser kit I built.
I’ve started building some laser cut buildings for my model railroad. I figured that I could get a head start buy assembling some buildings in the winter, before I can start building the actual layout itself.
Since I’ve never built one of these before I thought I’d start out with something small and simple. Earl’s Oil by Bar Mills seemed to fit the bill. It’s a smaller building with some other parts to make a diorama of an oil dealer.
The kit was pretty nicely designed, I thought. The windows and door were cut out of thin material that had adhesive on the back, so you pretty much just stuck them together. Here they are assembled and painted.
I also pre-painted most of the other parts before assembly.
Assembly was pretty simple – like I said, it’s not a complicated kit. The little rafters for the roof were a bit fiddly, but not a huge problem. Here is a shot taken during assembly.
I did some pre-weathering while I painted it. I’m not sure if I’m satisfied with it yet, we’ll see how it looks on the layout with grass and debris around it.
The roof was printed cardstock to look like rusty tin roofing. I think it looks pretty good. Maybe a little thick.
I’m not 100% satisfied with the sign placement. It might suck to remove it though. Other than than, I think it turned out pretty nice. I bought a tanker truck to use in the scene. It came painted for the Navy, so I’ll have to paint it and add some details. Looks good though.
Overall I’m pretty happy with the way it turned out. It also came with some oil and gasoline tanks and a bill board that I’ll finish later when I setup the scene on the layout.
